It brings something fresh to the revenge narrative; a transcendent humanistic approach instead of the usual trendy nihilism or blood thirsty vengeance. A quality film.
For whatever reason this didn't give me the full impact until my recent second viewing. It's slow paced, contemplative and in its subtlety it left an emotional impact on me. It sneaks up on you. You could debate whether it deserves 5 stars or not but it gets that rating from me because it left a big impression. Also, the cinematography is incredible! Definitely one to view on blu-ray!
Good character-driven crime movie. Looks like it would be really beautiful on film. The theater I saw it at projected digitally and the quality was middling.
REVANCHE is a bona fide masterpiece. Gotz Spielmann directs with as steady a hand as Kubrick, Bergman & Antonioni. Each frame is a painting & feels fully confident, lying before us exposed to scrutiny. The scenes are precise, yet they breathe. The characters are mythic. They travel across the screen, through an environment that engulfs them, yet they endure. The drama is tense & the catharsis thoroughly fulfilling.
I just watched this again and loved it just as much as the first viewing.
In terms of contemporary Criterion film, this is probably, along with Hunger, the best. So much complexity in the caracter, a lot of poignant question, wonderful directing, cinematography, screenplay......
Haunting, tragic, and highly engaging. Extremely well paced, I wouldn't take out or shorten any scene.
What an amazing film! It certainly deserves the 96% rating over at RT. A character driven thriller and doomed romance with neo-noir elements. The themes of guilt, revenge and forgiveness are dealt with intelligence and a quiet foreboding suspense that is absolutely riveting. The story is unpredictable and very affecting. It stayed with me for days afterward. Definitely a must see and a must have.
A very human drama, and an integral piece of modern German cinema. Kirsch reminds me of Bruno Ganz in "The American Friend", carrying just as hefty a load of anguish and desperation.
The first time I ever use the word 'absorbing' in comments about films. One revenge film that's pretty much has it all, without any exaggerations. Plus charming visuals. Definitely worth seeing.
"Revanche" is a dish best served cold, but cold filmmaking has never been so personal. I feel like the film could be thrown in the ring with Von Trier and Haneke's best and compete in terms of technique / psychological anguish. The modernist visuals were exquisite, and the food for thought offered was plentiful. Every character in the film was essential, each who's circumstances are equally as thrilling as the story.
This is the most effective antidote to the merciless, brutal, and let's face it, increasingly boring "revenge" movies that have been produced in the last ten years. A good cleansing after an orgy of Kill Bills, Sympathies for Mr./Lady Vengeance, Harry Browns etc etc. Strongly recommended
the pacing tells you to think and meditate but then provides very little to mull over.
I must say that this film absolutely blew me away. Sweeping, beautiful, pragmatic, intense. The drama, story structure, shifts in setting, character development, photography, opening image ...
A ponderous paint-by-numbers "thriller" that manages to fulfill every stereotype in the book.
Talk about a good film. I love how starts off kind of vicious in its way, and then before you know it it shocks you off your feet and carries you along as it develops into its beautiful conclusion.
I love the way the recurring camera position underline the progressive shift in mood.... the same with the nearly inperceptible growth of shot duration transforming the economy of mise en scene of the beginning in a very nuanced reflection about characters choices...
