yes...but it's funny now that we've grown up, right?
I hadn't seen Robocop in at least 20 years, but a friend considers it such a critical part of his formation as a film maker, and talks about it so often, that a refresher was in order. So, when I had the chance to see it in glorious 35mm at the Sunshine, I jumped at it. The movie is certainly a victim of its age, but the story's good and it was a blast to watch.
Robocop is actually a near-perfect film. The violence is not to some people's taste but I'd argue it is relevant to convey the dystopic, impending future, which - even after nearly 25 years - is truer to life than other fantastical visions of the future. It is not only a sci-fi action film, but also a critique of our own society albeit via a caricatured lens. In a sense it is satire of the highest form. Under-rated.
Re-watched this for the first time in at least 15 years & it really holds up well, including the FX - the sharp satire has lost none of its bite, the dark humor still induces guilty chuckles and the performances, especially by Peter Weller, Miguel Ferrer & Kurtwood Smith were spot on. Verhoeven's best English language film?
This is one of the most multi-layered movies ever made. My brother could watch Robocop for the insane violence and quotable dialogue. I could dive deep and admire the sharp satire and original ideas. It's a movie than ANYONE can appreciate, and it's my favorite movie of all time.
Some surprisingly innovative directing, unforgettable one liners and incredibly gratifying set-pieces make this unsophisticated and tactless film an irresistible watch. Say what you like about this film, at it's core it's pure entertainment. 4 stars
RoboCop – both the film and the crimefighter – are full of contradictions. The character is part man, part machine; the film is part bloody action flick, part smart comedic satire. It’s also one of the rare films to do both well. It’s an action film with brains, but with balls, too. http://filmcapsule.wordpress.com/2011/04/22/robocop/
Robocop is hilarious, has great action, an iconic character, and a swell leitmotif by Basil Poledouris.
This movie is fun fun fun! One of the few big-budget 80s sci-fi movies I can come back to again and again.
I think I prefer this movie to Terminator 2. Makes you think a little bit more about life and emotion versus technology.
As fresh, funny, and absolutely grotesque now as it was in 1987. A good corrective to Avatar (technology, themes, and genre).
