Synopsis

Down-and-dirty musical love story set in the world of the working class. Nick is an ironworker who builds and repairs bridges. He’s married to Kitty, a dressmaker, a strong and gentle woman with whom he has three daughters. He is carrying on a torrid affair with a redheaded woman named Tula. Nick is basically a good, hardworking man driven forward by will and blinded by his urges. Like Oedipus at Colonus, he is sent into exile and searches to find his way back through the damage he has done. Explores the cost and value of a relationship through life and death. When the characters can no longer express themselves with language, they break into song, lip-synching the tunes lodged in their subconscious. It is their way to escape the harsh reality of their world – to dream, to remember, and to connect to another human being. –IMDb

One of the top character actors of his era, John Turturro is a fixture of the contemporary American independent filmmaking landscape. Born February 28, 1957, in Brooklyn, NY, Turturro became fascinated by movies during childhood, and after graduating from college he won a scholarship to study at the prestigious Yale School of Drama. He made his film debut in Martin Scorsese’s 1980 masterpiece Raging Bull but did not reappear onscreen prior to 1984’s The Exterminator 2. That same year, he debuted on Broadway in Death of a Salesman.
Small roles in diverse fare including Susan Seidelman’s 1985 comedy Desperately Seeking Susan, Scorsese’s 1986 drama The Color of Money, and Woody Allen’s masterful Hannah and Her Sisters kept Turturro busy throughout much of the decade, but his breakthrough… read more

I've seen the whole singing along with pop songs done better elsewhere. I didn't feel any sort of interaction between any of the characters, its like they were all in different films. Winslet & Walken were great, but I didn't believe for one second that Mary-Louise Parker and that other chick from the Sopranos were Gandolfini's daughters.

The film has it’s moments, But in the end feels like a disappointment. It feels like John Turturro has something to say and wants the film to have a deeper meaning but doesn’t exactly convey, it’s…  read review
