Synopsis

Joan Wilder is a mousey writer of romance novels. She finds a package from her sister mailed from Colombia in her mailbox. A call from her sister tells her that she has been kidnapped and that bringing the package to Colombia is necessary for her safety and release. Being fairly clueless, she leaves for Colombia to rescue her sister. She is lost within hours of her arrival. She is nearly murdered by one of the men searching for the package when Jack Colton, a fairly low life American rescues her. They begin a journey through the jungle with bullets flying nearby. Is Joan up to all of this? What a way to find out. —IMDb

Robert Zemeckis

American director Robert Zemeckis studied filmmaking at Northern Illinois University, and then got his start with a job with the film editing department at WMAQ-TV, Chicago’s NBC flagship station. After commercial work, Zemeckis and his friend and collaborator, Bob Gale, became assistants to Steven Spielberg. It was Spielberg who lined up Zemeckis’ first directing job, the 1977 comedy/nostalgia blend I Wanna Hold Your Hand; despite the film’s low budget, it demonstrated Zemeckis’ ability to combine credible live-action sequences with elaborate special effects devices. Spielberg next had Zemeckis and Gale work on the screenplay of 1941 (1979), which, despite its disappointing box-office returns, convinced the young director that his protegés were valuable commodities.

Almost 30 years on this early Zemeckis picture still is a pretty good saturday morning serial style adventure. A big hit on release find it interesting that in today's market this picture would be a disaster. Stars over 20 years old, no adrenaline set piece after set piece, no modern rock score.....etc. What it lacks in orginality it makes up for in charm with great chemistry between Douglas and Turner. fun.

Often considered a cheap Raiders rip-off, this terrifically entertaining action adventure picture was based on a screenplay written several years before Raiders went into development. It proved to be a big hit and a major turning point for those involved. Zemeckis was only a year away from Back To The Future, Turner would soon be Oscar nominated for Peggy Sue Got Married and Douglas had Gordon Gekko in his sights...
