NICE FILM, but I don't get it when they says that cuban music has french influence. Are these slaves really french people?
simplistically cute. The pictures themselves are worth the film, dialogue is supportive but not necessary as the stills make it.
At last we see Cubans, just as they are, rhythmic, vibrant and subversive. In each image, the paired narration by Varda and Piccoli give the historical context of these images. Under further examination we get a sense of their punctum - the aspect which wounds the spectator - creating a beautiful link between the subject in the image and the spectator. She structures most of her films on Barthes' ideology.
Salut les cubains is such a wonderful film. I'm glad it's available here on The Auteurs. This film is featured in the Directors World Cup 2010 here at MUBI. Hopefully it will do well and a lot of people will be able to see the film. PM me for more info on the Directors World Cup if you don't know about it already. Thanks!
