I think Kobayashi's other famous film on samurai rebellion "Harakiri" is in another class in terms of quality to this film, but this is fun nevertheless.
Nice change for me in seeing a non-Kurosawa collaboration with Mifune and wow I was exceeded in expectations. Really fantastic & Mifune showed a lot of depth to his character.
It was nice to see Yoko Tsukasa in a Jidaigeki, I absolutely loved her in Late Autumn. And Toshiro Mifune is badass as always in this movie, I wish he was my dad.
In my opinion one of if not the greatest Samurai film ever made. It's the battle of the individul against a social system based on loyalty. But where does loyalty end and one's own concept of justice begin? The moment where the father finally has had enough and lashes out in a fiery rage of violence against anyone who dare attack him is one of the finest moments in Japanese cinema.
Samurai Rebellion so much resembles Harakiri, another Kobayashi film. Beautifully shot, great cinematography and camerawork make this rise-against-power film a favorite of mine.
This movie was so ahead of its time. And the soundtrack is unbelievable. Masterpiece.
Easily one of my favorite Jidai Geki films and performances by Mifune outside of Kurosawa's filmography.
