Sad, beautiful, magical and terrifying, this film perfectly blends reality and fantasy with startling results. For as visually engaging as it is, I was amazed at the spectrum of empathy as the film entices the viewer.
While El Topo was very much a product of its time, Santa Sangre is a film that's universal. Yes, it's weird as hell, and uncomfortable to boot, but Jodorowsky's cult masterpiece is such a beautiful and poetic masterpiece. It's a nightmare, yes, but it's also a fantastic dream, it's about the capability for good and evil that exists within all of us, for such a surreal film, it's extremely human.
More magic realism than surrealism, "Santa sangre" achieves a tone that has been passed from one blank-faced outrage to another, from Keaton to Krazy Kat to Napoleon Dynamite. While the delirious plot and circus milieu tempt us toward Felliniesque startlements, what lasts is the willingness of its characters to live in such a world unquestioningly, their acceptance of mysterious premises almost optimistic.
As bizarre as it is its also Jodorowsky most straightforward film and oddly enough his most sincere. It doesn't have the shocks per minute ratio that Holy Mountain does but as far as the bits that actually resonate this film is more consistent and it's less self congratulatory than El Topo.
A brilliant horror film, although to classify it in the restrains of that genre feels very awkward and unfair because it achieves so much more. Jodorowsky feels less compelled to baffle the audience and makes his usual creative imagery and symbolism to be put in good use, the movie leads to an actual message and a beautiful, devastating ending.
I have to make a critical comment on the film to video transfer for the Severin bluray edition - it doesn't impress me, the image seems too bright to me. At times the image looks gauzy and opaque looking. The UK DVD looks better to me. On the plus side, the amount of extras is amazing and almost supercedes the odd video transfer.
Another bizarre masterpiece from Alejandro Jodorowsky. Instead of going for the full-blown surrealism of 'El Topo' and 'The Holy Mountain', he weaves his strange and nightmarish visions into a strong story with well-developed characters. A backstage circus melodrama, twisted psycho-thriller, and gothic horror film all with a darkly comic, operatic tone. Magnificent score by Simon Boswell.
One of Jodorowsky's greatest Straight forward story telling considering his other films but just as amazing as anything he's ever done I really hope for a U.S. release of this film
