Commits the two cardinal sins of horror flicks: it's not scary, and it's (ludicruosly) overcomplicated. It's a key example of the movie world's incompetent attempts to replicate the horror of the real world by way of substituting simple, dumb sadism for meaningful insight into what makes humans tick.
The only ''good'' Saw movie for me , well...good , I don't LIKE it , but its a good horror flick , nothing more , nothing less
Really good movie! It such a shame they kept on diluting the awesomeness of this movie by making a load of bad sequels. This was a perfect blend of thriller, horror and mystery that actually had some great surprises up its sleeve.
Despite the fact that the rest of the series plays with the ultra-gore and torture porn shit, the first "Saw" remains a brilliantly written horror film, and one of the most terrifying experience that I had (don't watch it in the dark, a saturday evening)
Even though the series took a nosedive and kept on churning out crap, the original was a worthy horror film.
Great production design (it's like Se7en but more garish & cartoony) unfortunately, you do not give a fuck about the characters. Yes, that does matter in film where characters are tortured every couple of minutes.
brilliant idea, done on a small budget. Couple of boys from Melbourne made an empire by going to hollywood. Not as gory as people think, it's more psychological. The introduction of the creepiest villians of all time. Surprising role for Cary Elwes, which he pulls of really well.
A great concept and idea brilliantly executed, its got a bit silly now the series but this one was the best
I have to admit the idea of the movie is good, but the execution was poor. All the sequels just seemed like a cheap ploy to get people's money every Halloween.
I gave it an extra star for surprising me with the ending. Terrible acting, ridiculous editing, shoot-me flashbacks etc. How did this get turned into a franchise? There's an interesting movie in that room with the 2 chained guys, too bad the filmmakers didn't fulfill it.
How this idiotic mess turned into a franchise is a mystery for the ages. Worth watching for a career-worst performance by Danny Glover basically doing a parody of "Danny Glover acting in a horrible movie."
Saw 1 is probably as good as American horror can get for the rest of history. The twist was amazing the first time around, and the concept is far more philosophical and deeper than your run-of-the-mill slasher/horror flick from the US. We all know they got awful as they progressed, but the original is quite good.
saw is one of the best horror films of all decades. too bad there won't be another saw in 2011 onwards but man i love saw!
Great original idea, terrible execution... Why are people fascinated by this? Or are they? This was really bad and extremely disappointing.
More than a full-on torture movie - it has it's moments. A pretty decent screenplay, and consistently honest. However, this film is slow (not in a good way), as it tends to fade away from the matter at hand almost too much. A good experience. 3/5.
