What can you say about Scarface that hasn’t already been said? It’s an amazing movie with a great sense of humor, as always, from Brian De Palma. It’s a gangster movie like you’ve never seen before, it gets rid of the clichés and brings in a more modern way of depicting a crime lord. Al Pacino is flawless as Tony Montana. He’s a disgusting human being, yet you can’t help but love him. The visuals are perfect and completely fit the world of the Cuban immigrant mobster. It’s really a movie with a personality all to itself.

I’ve thought about reviewing the acting, directing and production for this film, however, others would do a better job than I. I cannot be objective because this film touches my imagination and takes me past those things. I wish I was Tony Montana, even with the knowledge of his faults and demise. He is my anti-hero, bad but good, wrong but right, mean but kind, kind because he has given my imagination so much since I first knew of him.
I like many other men imagine a world where we are Tony, we deal the drugs and get the girl, and she is always Pfeiffer, beautiful and delicate but sharp enough to cut us down when the dream becomes an over indulgent nightmare. It doesn’t matter that this world is flawed, all that matters is that for a brief moment, the world is yours.

This is what happens when directors try to cater to the lowest common denominator. Scarface is the culmination of bad acting, poor direction, excess of the highest order and arrogance to all reality, all set in front of the backdrop of the Florida of the 80’s. In a lot of ways Scarface reminds me that all the talent in the world just can’t help some films. DePalma has never impressed me with any of his films, but here he just shows that he has a very incoherent and cluttered vision. The film says quite literally nothing that isn’t already known to the masses. The principal message (Don’t Fuckin Do Drugs, Meng’) is something all sensible human beings are aware of, and the rise and fall story of an immigrant has been told over and over again that by the time Scarface was made it was redundant. I honestly will never understand why people love this film the way that they do. If you ask me it’s garbage.
