So...expoiting Holocaust stories to find oppertunites to mine suspense and sentiment?
Went in expecting to hate it but couldn't help but be absorbed by every minute of it. Very powerful.
Say what you will about the movie but Ralph Fiennes here is brilliant, and I mean really really scary.
One of the best movies ever made. Some of you need to get over your dislike for Spielberg and appreciate this for what it is.

@Neil Exploting Holocaust stories? It just showed what happened. If this had been directed by some French director then everybody on MUBI would've loved it, even if it was the same movie.
Showed what happened? The film is very inaccurate from a historical perspective. Also, if it was directed by "some French director" my feeling would be no different. The film would still be terrible.
And it's not about a "dislike for Speilberg" either, he's made some brilliant films (A.I., Empire of the Sun, Jurassic Park, Duel)
People on this wall are pretty violent about this one... I do find the film overrated but not bad or manipulative. In terms of visuals I wasn't that affected by the way he portrayed many of the scenes, it was too focused on being grand to look at the details. Full disclosure: I've been to Yad Vashem in Israel, the Holocaust museum in DC and learned about it year after year in Hebrew school & normal school.
He seems to treat Schindler as some kind of saint, rather than an opportunist out to make more money. Overrated.
This film is too much a Hollywood film to be interesting. Some elements are very good and it's probably not because Spielberg directed it, but it's like the american have to find a happy ending in a film about Shoah, the biggest genocide of XXth century. Why do they have to tell the story of a good man, when obviously if everybody was like him, it wouldn't have happened ? because it has to be entertaining anyway ?
The subject material is too difficult for Spielberg to find a balance in his direction. He frequently over-emphasizes a point. The ghetto massacre may just be the highlight of his career - the imagery is so visceral and heart-pounding that the other moments where the film becomes Hollywood conventional pale in comparison. For the most part though, the sum of its part out balances the flaws. Great perfs from all.
watched this for the first time in yearssss and years tonight and omg, its just as affecting as the first time. brilliant acting
Most of the complaints against this film are either by those that hate anything with the name Spielberg attached to it or those that claim that it is "too manipulative," whatever that means. Many great directors are applauded for such "manipulation" yet Spielberg is lambasted for it. If an audience allows itself to be manipulated, that's on them. This work stands on its own, regardless of manipulation.
for me, everything that steven spielberg ever produced is like a touch of midas.
Definitely one of my top 5 favorite. This movie is on a different level. So emotionally powerful. Great BW cinematography. Strong performances all around. Haunting John Williams music. Cannot help but cry at the ending.
I had to keep pausing to catch my breath, very, very distressing. I can't imagine watching it again unless I had to. Too distressing for me. But a fantastic and beautifully put together film.
great cinematography, great story, but way too much brain washing
Yes, yes, it's really good. It's not, however, The Greatest Movie Of All Time, nor is it Spielberg's Greatest Movie, nor is it, even, the Best Movie of 1993.
One of those movies people who only watch blockbusters would consider "the greatest". An average film at best, that glosses over a lot of what went on and makes Schindler out to be nicer than what he actually was.
The real Oskar Schindler was a bastard who exploited starving Jews through forced labor. When asked who they liked better, Oskar Schindler in reality or as portrayed by Liam Neeson survivors unanimously stated "Liam Neeson". This movie is bullshit.
