Director

Original

Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Hitchcock has been the most well-known director to the general public since the 1940s – and he remains so in the 21st century, more than 25 years after his death. This is an odd one because it starts like a comedy, then turns dark and brooding, and ends like a military propaganda. Thematically it's a meditation on the 'wrong man' motif in which the protagonist is both the victim and the conspirator. The quartet of actors are all marvelous in this ensemble drama to the point that Gielgud becomes the least interesting character. Uneven in tone, but this is first rate Hitchcock.

Guilgud's performance leaves much to be desired but Lorre steals the show in this Hitchcock thriller that, while uneven, contains some trademark moments.

Not my favourite of Hitchcock's British period, but still quite fun regardless. Forever a fan of Peter Lorre.
