this is one of those moments i feel content being a mere spectator. the film is so cold and predictable, you'd like the mother to open her eyes, watch for the red flags. but no, francois wants us to know how we forget reason when we are lonely, too lonely, for our own good, that we don't heed the danger because we long for some company.
this bothered me for so many reasons. completely transparent, and lacked in atmosphere and reason. i would give it one star but i'm giving it an extra star because marina de van is perfect in everything she does.
A short, simple thriller with 2 women to be feared.A mysterious stranger, and a careless, selfish mother who leaves her child alone with said stranger.
See the Sea is a slow-burning, tense film that ultimately becomes haunting and grotesque as the climax grow closer. If you enjoy this title in Francois Ozon's filmography, you would undoubtedly enjoy it's sister piece Under the Sand, and A Little Death (which is the meeting point between the sexualkitsche and the psychosubversive.)
Francois Ozon is such an underrated contemporary director. As an artist, he appears to have two unique perspectives; a "teenage" Ozon who is playful toward sexuality and violence, dabbling in surrealism and kitsche... and an "adult" Ozon who's paintbrush is dipped in something darker, leading to psychological and subversive experiences.
