Synopsis

A Moravian farmhouse in the days following the end of WWII is occupied by a retreating band of Ukranian guerillas, who until recently were resistance fighters battling the Nazis. Faced with their abusive and criminal behavior, the peaceful farmer must choose between acquiescence and standing up to the occupiers. Notable for the intensity of its violence and an extraordinary score by Vláčil’s regular collaborator, Zdeněk Liška, “a composer who matched the director’s unorthodox eye with an extraordinary ear for unexpected tonal coloring and unconventional instrumentation; here it’s part-Morricone, part Central European pastoral.” – Michael Brooke, Sight & Sound –AFI

Frantisek Vlacil was born in Cesky Tesin and spent his childhood and early adulthood in northern Moravia and Brno. His father was an attorney, but, at the end of World War I, after he returned from his sojourn with the Czech Legion in Russia, he remained in the military. His mother was Czech, but when she was six months old, her family moved to Russia. She returned to Czechoslovakia in 1919.

Frantisek started to display artistic talent at a very early age. After completing secondary school, he studied at the Philosophical Faculty of Masaryk University in Brno from 1945 to 1949, specializing in art history and aesthetics. At the same time, he was active in a Brno-based puppetry and animated film group as well as at a studio that produced popular scientific educational films. He became a permanent employee of the latter in 1947 and gradually became acquainted with all of the professions involved in production. In 1951, on the basis of a decree issued by Minister of National Defense… read more

A family is caught between a desperate group of third reich's military leftovers and the obtuse inertia of the local authorities that receive information about dangerous guerillas with the curiosity and light-heartedness due to fashionable trivia. Bestiality of the former matches the apathetic opacity of the latter, cardboard peace keepers asking dopey questions are no enemy for a reckless gang of left-behinds.

Solitude of living is solitude of defense. It is as if that which refuses a share in the gregarious beehive of the new commune is the last to receive the benefits of state protection and care. Liska's performance is wonderful, with a music deep and elusive like an echo, airy and ubiquitous like the ever spinning time.
