An elegant study on the relationship between man and wars, giving no details about the civil war in this movie, like where and when it ends universalizing it. Phenomenal approach to the psychological consequences of such, that with just a good script and good actors can extract much already. Of course, the photography is monumental.
What a peculiar story for Bergman. I can't believe that this is the same director that directed with the precision of Through A Glass Darkly and The Virgin Spring. Very naturalistic, even going into handheld camera movements. I'm going to have to think this one through a bit. It's extremely painful to watch- even for a Bergman film.
Very interesting story and camerawork along with two fantastic lead performances from Ullmann and Sydow. Extremely brutal and hard to take but well worth it because this is a fantastic piece of filmmaking. Bergman proves he one of the best again!
Interesting too see Bergman doing this kind of story. Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow are fantastic.
An intriguing tale which some rather haunting imagery, particularity the scene immediately after the bombing ceases and the final scene in the boat stays with you. My only frustration was that the relational tension and what seemed to me to be a rather shocking adulterous occurance felt somewhat swept under the rug.
A rare film - challenges the myth that love conquers all. Here love is presented like a delicate flora that requires the right conditions to grow and blossom; and this species will not just wither and die when those conditions are denied, but will transform into something cruel, exacting, even cannibalistic.
