in the same way cocteau only made sense to me after seeing ‘les enfants terribles’ and then i couldn’t help myself but fall madly in love, truffaut only made sense to me after seeing this (despite seeing a handful of his other films) and now i’m unhealthily infatuated with it. one of the only films i’ve ever seen that was equally comic and tragic without being overly indulgent in either, more just an authentic portrait of the nature of life in all its beauty and misery. charles aznavour’s eyes are some of the most expressive and the final shot of the film i consider to be one of the most poignant monologues despite lacking any verbal articulation. your association to the theme music may evolve dramatically throughout the film and what once was only the charming, upbeat beginning credit music may very well become the music that will lead to you irrepressible weeping.
