In this vivid historical drama set in 1980s East Germany, two dockworkers and best friends who dream of escaping the repressive regime are forced to choose their loyalties when the state police promise them safe passage out of the country — if they inform on their co-workers and union leader. –TIFF
An inspiring tale of love, loyalty, and escape, where the camera's first priority was storytelling and not to show off (although it was beautiful all the same). The film captured the paranoia and voyeurism of the time and place quite effectively and all performances felt inspired, for the most part. Overall, a very impressive first feature from a director who will undoubtedly impress again.
