The constant question: "What ever happened to the Martin Scorsese who directed the classics Mean Streets & Taxi Driver?"
Not one of Scorsese's best -- but still, Shutter Island is a lesson class of fine camerawork and editing. A must see.
I thought the movie was pretty well told and do not understand why people find it mind blowing? It was all pretty damn clear therefore not that exciting. Who didn't see that ending coming from the trailer alone? You want a good mind fuck? Go watch Mulholland Dr. That film is crafted better and leaves you using your brain a lot more.
It's so lacking in subtlety that one can't but help be turned off by what is going on. It's like being smacked over the head with a candy cane of image, sound and text book psychology. DiCaprio works hard but the film is too big around him for him to rescue all that is going on. With a twist too easily spotted, Shutter Island once again proves Scorsese's inability to scale back. He should speak to Kore-eda.

Fine performers chewing the scenery in a beautifully made film that can support those performances. This is a film you have to pay attention to at every moment.
With each viewing I become more and more convinced that the whole thing was, in fact, an attempt to break through to a sick patient. But maybe... I'm not sure. One thing is certain: there are some of the most brilliantly isolated environments lit in this film -true dream at that.
Utter mind fuck but absolutely brilliant. Great, original and clever story. Carefully executed. I liked the special effects although they unnecessarily dominated the film too much for my taste. Leonardo Dicaprio's awesome performance stood out. Made me truly appreciate him as an actor. However, it made me think of Inception a lot.
The excessive art direction and special effects doom this film and stymie the storyline, creating a confusing morass instead of the creepy thriller it could have been
It was an ok movie. I especially loved the dream sequence when he's inside the house with his wife, absolutely gorgeous. It would have probably been better if the final twist was revealed in a more subtle way though, I think it's more interesting for the audience to figure things out on their own even though after multiple viewings, there are still sometimes different interpretations and mysteries remaining.
Leo's desperation for an Oscar really came to a head in this bomb of a movie. Michelle Williams wiped the screen with him in her wonderful and subtle performance, the highlight of this Scorsese stinker.
Martin Scorsese is a very special Giant but God! I really hated this movie. When my friend gave me great news we could watch it that night I just couldn't wait.I had to stay until the end because I did not want to offend my friend who was watching second time & mesmerized by it. Actually he was working in a mental institution!
Didn't Zelda Fitzgerald go crazy in a hospital called ASHECLIFFE? Just sayin.
What I found extraordinary in Scorsese's feature was the first-time usage of such a distilled, gothic and exasperatingly distant approach to the thematic, which allows it to transcend into such an absorbingly atmospheric film, also thanks to it's eerie music and it's beautiful nightmare sequences that include the unforgettable frozen bodies , artfully displayed at Dachau. One of the few Scorseses I actually enjoyed.
Stylish but empty and pointless. It's not even surprising - ending is "stolen" from Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
WHOAAA!!!! I love this movie. Complicated.. but we're allowed to keep our own perspective
