A familiar story lent poignancy by its charming leads & adroit direction by Whelan (veteran of Lloyd comedies, demonstrating a facility for pathos as well as humor). Laughton especially will break your heart; he's one of the best actors, character or no, ever on screen--this film is proof. Leigh in a pre-GWTW role is flighty, charming, cunning & alluring as ever. A pleasant surprise, too often overlooked.
wonderful performances from laughton and leigh as struggling street performers. laughton is particularly heartbreaking.
