David Pierre Fila was born in 1954 in Brazzaville. He studied at the University Institute of Technology (Bordeaux), and then became a
PhD student in Anthropology at the EHESS. He then travelled to Russia training as a camera operator.
In 1995, David Pierre Fila produced his first feature film, Matanga. He was production manager on Mamy Wata (1989-90) by Moustapha Diop, then assistant director of the feature film, Finzan (1988-89) by Check Oumar Sissoko, and the short films by Henry Mrozowski, Un Grand Quelqu’un and Le Retour.
