This film doesn’t follow the standard linear plot line you all grew up to know and love. Instead we watch 3 main stories unfold, and understand the entity that is “Sin City”. In each story we have reoccurring characters, locations, and scenery. At some points in the film you have this feeling that everything will come crashing down on each other, but it doesn’t. Now, whether this was a deliberate decision to split the entire story between this and the 2 future films to come or not, we don’t know. Regardless, it is a fun ride.

This film is a great example of neo-noir; With all the violence, beautiful women, color schemes, set designs (cough cough cgi), and of course my favorite, the anti-hero. Needless to say Rodriguez and Miller left there own touch to the possible genre-film. This is probably the best adaptation of a graphic novel to film I have seen.

I quite enjoyed this little epic, admiring the skill with which it reproduced the trashy effects and stilted sexist dialect of pulp cartoon fiction (aka “graphic novels”). The coloured eyes were particularly praiseworthy. I occasionally laughed out loud at the ludicrous violence and the ever-growing number of Elastoplasts on the faces of the various “heroes”. There were tasty arses on display. On the negative side, I felt the film to be over-extended and repetitive: including 3 similar stories was at least one too many. Personally, I would have liked to have seen Bruce Willis killed off much earlier.

An amazingly detailed and dead on adaption from Frank Miller’s universe. The visual style is unlike any other and almost dreamlike. The entire cast was perfect, you couldn’t ask for better performances. Mickey Rourke plays Marv in a way that is almost scary and Clive Owen and Bruce Willis make Dwight and Hartigan come to life. It is anything and everything you could wish for in a comic book movie. I think in terms of style and shear coolness, Sin City is one of a kind.

This movie, which i think is the best Rodriguez has directed so far, still stands multiple viewings. Although not entirely balanced, each segment has it’s highlights.

One thing to consider, the so called extended cut actually loses the dramatic power that the theatrical cut had, so watch it just as an oddity.

Why you should watch it: Bruce Willis, who i think was born to play righteous cop Hartigan, the same goes to Mickey Rourke and his Marv. And the whole aesthetic of the film.
