One of the most delightful comedies ever made came from the mind of one the darkest and most tortured directors who ever lived. Actually, Smiles of a Summer Night fits perfectly into Bergman’s oeuvre. Essentially, a collection of bored and frustrated bourgeoisie play a series of mind games with one another and nobody is truly happy in the end. However, the film is executed in such a fun and whimsical fashion which embraces life’s joys and disappointments that you can’t help but watch with a smile.

And who said that Ingmar Bergman didn’t have a sense of humor?

Smiles of a Summer Night is a sweet little giddy movie from, surprisingly, Ingmar Bergman (who I consider to be one of the greatest directors of all time). This is also the the breakthrough success Bergman needed, as the studio told him that they would not finance his next film if Smiles did not perform well. Thankfully it did, and paved him a road with a sign that read, “total control” for whatever else he made there after (cue Seventh Seal).

Smiles is a dialogue heavy, romantic comedy (funny how Woody Allan isn’t that moved by this piece) about mismatched couples and how they all come together at the estate of a hailed actress who tries to set the course right for everybody, including herself. Bergman usually deals with themes regarding the human condition (depression, illness, confusion, etc.) and it can still be seen here, as some people question their love, some people question their life and others are just plain horny. It’s all in good fun.

Smiles Of A Summer Night is regarded by many as one of the greatest films Ingmar Bergman has ever made throughout his magnificent directing career. The script of the film is extremely intense for a comedy picture. As for the audiences around the world, Bergman’s film making ability and the brilliant performances of the characters in the play catapulted him to stardom. Ulla Jacobson’s performance in this film along with the others are remarkable and beautiful. This is one of those films that gives you a chance to explore what directors are trying to achieve by capturing our minds and blending it into his or her’s perspective without hesitation or desire to make us suffer within one’s heart. It’s a lovely comedic screw-ball film that attracts different people with different mental view or prospect. A great gift from a brilliant director of the 20th century-Ingmar Bergman, not to miss. The visuals are still almost perfect, and the dialogues are all over the place but stays in one particular section, these are Bergman’s trademark. This is a must see for any movie addicts out there. Smiles Of A Summer Night will leave you a warm feeling and a beautiful smile to go along with your calm sensations. Grab it and see it! 9/10.
