Each cut in this film is a shock in itself, an audio-visual assault on the viewer. While less mythic than La Vie Nouvelle, the characters are still archetypes and the narrative is still secondary to the plasticity of the images. I recall Grandrieux talk about wanting to express the primal world seen by children who have yet to be exposed to language, which explains the somatic physicality and absence of psychology of his films. I think the whole theater audience went batshit during the puppet show scene, but I couldn’t tell because that scene was so loud.
