Yes it does
A lot of people hated this movie, I though it was good, loved the visual style and the bright colours of the production design.
As negative as the criticisms are for this film is, it does bring forward a new and very necessary model for hollywood action films- Turbo-Exposition. No need for several drawn out scenes to communicate simple, but key plot details; they're just simply composited at the start of an important sequence through layers, motion, and juxtaposition. Love it.
For all the good ideas that didn't translate too well, and others that lead to abysmal mistakes, there's an addictive pulse and demented confidence that makes this sparkly bomb far more endearing than it would have been if it was "perfect."
Just because anime can cause seizures and be nonsensical doesn't mean you should push it to this level!
Those race scenes. No use of green-screen and special effects is more significant, because this film turns its artifice into emotion, or rather feeds the tale's emotion into the races. The dialogue/acting could be the worst ever (and some is very bad), but we glean all we need to know of the story's emotional stakes from the races. Simply put, they are among the most essential and dazzling sequences ever filmed.
A couple cool, albeit eye-raping, race sequences don't save the shitfest that is the rest of the movie.
If you want to laugh, give your friends a few hits of acid, a copy of this film and a big screen TV. Then you stay sober and watch them watch the movie.
I rewatched Insterstella 5555. Speed Racer is definitely a retelling of sorts. The antagonists are essentially the same character; they even have the same logo and both wear purple. These two films should be "related" to the other on their respective pages.
One of those movies that focuses all it's efforts on style, yet has little substance, however, is still extremely enjoyable in the end. It's fast-paced style and pop-art visuals make it a nice Hollywood film. Nothing to rave about, but it's one of those things you just gotta take for what it is.
Has it occurred to anyone else that this is a slight retelling of the Daft Punk animated film "Interstella 5555"? The Wachowskis being the anime geeks that they are, I wouldn't put it past them.
De lo mas pendejo que he visto en mi vida. Solo le dedique 30 minutos, y fue demasiado.
intense experience. entertaining to an exhausting degree. designed for a young contemporary audience. narrative experimentation imported from other media that worked quite efficiently. action wise its the STAR WARS EP.1 podrace for 2 hours. the story itself is simple but works perfectly for the films focus. and yes, you actually get to love the kid and the monkey (the simplest device steals quite an expensive show)
What can I say about "Speed Racer"? It's shoddily directed, contains awful performances (yes, the Wachowskis managed to make Surandon, Goodman, Hirsch and Ricci bad) and is guaranteed to leave you with an enormous headache. I also love this movie. Few movies are more fun just for their audacious stupidity and sheer nerves. It completely bombed, and I predict it become the world's most expensive cult classic.
This movie got a lot of shit when it came out. It was criticized for being all eye-candy. I don't see what the problem is. The Wachowski boys set out to make Speed Racer into a film, which is what they did. (Actually, I think they hit the ball out of the park.) They came up with a lot of great innovations along they way. Has anyone ever seen wipes used the way they used it? I think the use of time is as innovative as
Some people just don't have a taste for sugary sweet candy. I know that I can only take so much sweet stuff before a gag reflex takes hold. With that said, this particular movie is like being on a candy high. A slightly heightened awareness is present, where everything is shown in an exaggerated, idealized sense. Also, if you get visceral enjoyment from a light-show or a fireworks display (like I do), "Speed Racer" is very much a movie that's catered to you. There are a ton of pretty colors that fly by very, very fast, in a virtuoso manner. Unlike many CG fests, this anime-inspired live-action cartoon does have a certain weightiness to the special effects, in a fashion that's clearly taking pages from cartoons and other "enhanced" epics over the past 40 years. Even if "Speed Racer" isn't enjoyed, or even admired for what it is, it is absolutely *not* an experience that's just up and forgotten. I agree with the comment below, that this is a movie that will be appreciated more in the future than in the present.
Its like the Wachowski brothers took a few little toy cars and shook them around inside a Trix box while a million dollar camera documented it. The result is 3 stars!
Everyone I know will chastise me for this but I actually enjoyed this film. Curse my love for cheesy, cheesy, cheesy!
