This film has an odd structure, and its hard to understand the aim of the film, or even the plot at times. The structure is it’s main downfall, and it’s not quite represented or executed as well as it should.
There is an eerie presence throughout the film, and I admire the art direction but when all is said and done it’s hard to make anything of it. The story jumps in and out of consciousness and leaves the viewer behind at several points.
David Cronenberg is a great director, but this is a massive misfire in terms if creating a chilling thriller.
Despite all that, Ralph Fiennes deserves a lot of praise. He commands and invites us inside the mind of his desperate, terrified, insane character to strong and convincing fashion, and that’s one of the reasons the film holds your attention.
Overall, the film is a mess. This could have been so, so much better. I’m hugely disappointed.
