* one of the most
Possibly Miyazaki's best film, and definitely one of the most expansive fantasy films of the decade.
Me and my best friend watched it together after he recommended it to me. I didn't know what to expect, but when it was finished he was asleep and i mouthed the words "thank you" towards him.
The first time I saw Spirited Away I was so overwhelmed that I rolled over on my bed and sobbed for about ten minutes after the credits rolled.
I'm probably in the minority in thinking that this is nowhere near Miyazaki's best movie. But then again, I'm a jaded cynic with a shriveled black heart who hates joy.
I love SPIRITED AWAY, but acknowledge it may be an acquired taste. Miyazaki's tale of a disillusioned 10-year-old & her journey through the looking glass is both stunning & visually grotesque in a way no American animated film would dare. The celebrity-laden English dub won an Oscar, but I'd recommend the original to all but the youngest. The Japanese language adds to the other worldly quality. (10/1/11 NY Film Fest)
I gotta watch this film again.. I was distracted by some stuff while watching,so couldn't get the sparks of it. Will watch neatly this time..
Not sure why it took me so long to jump on the Myazaki train but I'm glad I did. Watching Spirited Away I kept thinking about Eisenstein's thoughts on Disney and animation where he compared animation to fire on the basis of its infinite changeability. Miyazaki's knack for abstractions and changeability is precisely what I'd say makes him the most innovative filmmakers working today. Masterpiece.
first Miyazaki experience and I was completely blown away. the characters, setting, everything was just beautifully surreal. I don't know how he came up with these characters. I was completely mesmerized the entire time. I can definitely see myself watching more of his movies and loving them. I really loved the adventure plot of this story and look forward to more Miyazaki films :)
