The screenplay was pretty weak, and some background to the Jedi mythology would have been nice. But I love the chemistry between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, the hidden city, the podrace, the creativity of the Darth Maul and Nute Gunray characters, and the action sequences (some of the best of the whole saga). It was never going to live up to the originals, but it's still infinitely better than it's successors.

Visual splendor and innocence galore, this first prequel is a highlight in every way except for the acting and mainly the dialogue (which will be a consistent problem throughout the other prequels).

Let's stop the hatred and just enjoy it for what it is, a kiddie film with interesting political and spiritual views.

I think something inside my young, "Star Wars"-loving brain broke as I sat down in the theater to watch this movie and slowly realized that it was not...very...good. In fact, it's mostly terrible. Proof that George Lucas can't write convincing dialogue or direct actors to save his life. But somehow I find things to enjoy: Liam Neeson's resolute Jedi Knight, Duel of the Fates, Darth Maul's makeup, etc.

Undoubtedly a poor film, but in my opinion, it remains the better of the three prequels. At least if you forget about the annoying Anakin and Jar Jar Binks, there are some fun and exciting sequences, e.g. the podrace sequence and the Darth Maul battle to the tremendous Duel of the Fates score by John Williams, who I believe just gave up afterwards since the scoring for Episode 2 & 3 is just dull and lazy.

I re-watched this recently on hi-def, wondering if it would be any better visually thus hiding some of the flaws. Unfortunately, it is no better, and a crystal-clear screen makes the CG visuals (yes, including Jar Jar) look plain out of focus. I do put this on again ocasionally, like a hurt lover returning to an unhappy relationship in the hope of change that never manifests itself.

With all the time he had to develop a backstory, this is the best Lucas could come up with? Jar Jar is a middle finger to good story telling. The Goofy of the Star Wars universe.
