Some scenes/shots remind me of Fellini. Some, of Bergman. The typical (and great) Woody Allen´s "philoshopical comedy".
give me Jessica Harper with Woody Allen and I'm dead. yes this is somewhat a spoof of 8 1/2 but it still has its own beauty and cinematography. I was pleasantly surprised by this film because all I heard was that it was similar to Fellini. I loved every second of it though. give this one a chance
I'm fucking crazy about Woody Allen so I'm suspicious to talk about it. I thought it would surprise me, but that's was wrong. The film desapointed me in so many points, like the three womans who he have sex/have a friendly relashionship/etc. This confused me, and the people around him that show off SUDDENLY annoys me. But I loved the way Woody express him mind, such a crazy way, such a beautiful way.
I usually think Allen is overrated by his fanbase as a filmmaker and this one is such an 8 1/2 ripoff but I love Charlotte Rampling in this. The Allen films I like tend to depend on him casting some of my favorite actresses (see Gena Rowlands in Another Woman) but Rampling's 2 min (?)ish scene involving her breakdown in the mental hospital is arguably her best acting ever, which is saying something!
I don't care that this is an imitation of 8 1/2, I love this film. Allen is able to make his own 8 1/2 and it's a lot of fun. There are brilliantly composed moments.
Woody Allen really gave me a curve ball. His obvious style inspiration from Fellini's "8 1/2" complimented the sophisticated comedy that he's now known for. I feel like he got a lot of inspiration narrative-wise from Ingmar's "Wild Strawberries", because of tone and the surrealistic scenes that followed his stream of consciousness. Skipping back and forth in time and reality, it showed Sandy's mental/emotional state.
9 1/2? Somewhat more curdled than his contemporary output, but all the better for it, with a pleasingly bitter take on celebrity, which occasionally strays a little too far into navel gazing but otherwise strikes a suitably dour coffee-table vibe (and is superior to the later Celebrity). Willis' strikingly composed cinematography and continuation of spatially-detached Manhattan compositions helps considerably.
Perhaps a second viewing is essential - otherwise, a strange, detached Allen movie. The neurotic director getting it all off of his chest could have been more inviting.
I have a problem when I watch Allen's movies, and with this one in particular, I actually feel a deep sadness when I sense that they are about to end.
Eh. Ok. Although the 8 1/2 references/style got to me after a while. I like other films of his better, and I definitely dislike other films of his more.
An underrated masterpiece. Allen's 8 1/2. His character in the film completely displays what he was feeling at the time, his persona completely flayed across the screen, his heart on his sleeve. For someone who loves Allen's work as much as I do, this film was an utter marvel to watch.
pretentious and far too indebted to his influences, yet there is an energy and mania present that makes it one of Allen's most exciting films.
I remember this was the very first time I had seen Charlotte Rampling on screen. I haven’t been the same since.
One of Woody's best. Although the film has been criticized for its portrayal of fans. The films dream like quality works very well on screen. I especially love the scene with Charlotte Rampling near the end, sure, it may be sentimental but it never fails to put a smile on my face.
what a great, even brilliant, homage to Fellini's 8 1/2. From the opening scene, the black and white, the story, evertyhing is just so 8 1/2. and this doesn't mean that Allen just copied the film and makes his own 8 1/2. he still put some of his trademark, most notable are a wonderfully smart philosophical annendum, and break the fourth wall scene. overall, Remarkable, and could become my favorite Allen's movie, probably with a second viewing
Maybe my fav Woody Allen. Anny Hall is a bit like Alain Resnais - je t'aime, je t'aime for bourgeois urban people who want something simple and easy. This one is such as colorful as anything Resnais could came up with + top shape humor.
I agree with the kid below me...Allen's work would still be good after this film but not as much something to reckoned with. There would never be anything like this or "Sleeper" or "Take The Money and Run" ever again. The more serious personality would take over Allen...thus began the films that are seen as pretentious.
My favourite Allen film Id argue and say it was the last of Woody Allens "pure Woody Allen films"
Charlotte Rampling will always be fun to look at, especially so in Stardust Memories.
About a year ago, after an explosive break-up with a significant other, i took solace in this film three nights in a row, & it cheered me up beyond words. I considered watching it a fourth night, but decided that would just be sad. This is truly a film where Honesty, Pathos, & Comedy are all of the same cloth. Thank you, Woody Allen.
