Agreed. Although, I do choose Showgirls!
Either a brilliant satire on militarism and a baiting of an audience's yearnings towards a fascistic absolutism in their identifications with their film heroes, or violent rubbish using the cover of satire. But the older I get the warier I get of films that try to give you everything.
Caustic, fiery cinema. The acidic satire dripping from every hilarious/furious moment makes this one of the most radical and bizarre films ever made in Hollywood. Verhoeven is a true radical; he smuggles subtly in obviousness. A film equating America to Nazi's. In fact, I feel as if Verhoeven's one of the last sane men on Earth. Though most Verhoeven supporters prefer Showgirls (admittedly a masterpiece), I find his balls-to-the-wall political fury here to be his ultimate artistic statement on mankind. Honestly though, I'd hate to choose between them, both among the all-time great films.
Verhoeven's favorite themes culminate in an orgy of excessive gore and ultra violence. To be clear: this is a good thing.
I vividly remember being 9/10 years old and watching this movie in total awe, the coolest thing i had ever seen, this is such a great movie <3
Fun action film with special effects that still hold up pretty well. If you liked Verhoeven's other science-fiction films, you'll like Starship Troopers.
To describe a fascist society doesn't mean that you agree with it. Anyway, SPACESHIP TROOPERS is a satire, that says it all. A film that gets better and better with years passing by. Masterpiece.
When I watch this on my 65" TV with the 7.1 surround cranked, can't help myself, I still dig it! Kind of one of my guilty pleasure movies, with all its B-movie cheesiness and over-acting (which is actually all intentional and the very spirit of the piece). I do think it's a little too long, however, and could definitely use a few cuts here and there. But I think it's a lot of cheesy, bombastic sci-fi fun.
A testament to how mindblowing Verhoeven's film is: While teaching at Wesleyan, Anthony Braxton once canceled class for a week after seeing this, leaving a note on the door saying - "There is nothing more I can teach you. All I can do now is ask you to watch Starship Troopers."
Verhoeven's masterpiece, and, for me, the greatest war (and also media) satire film. Saw this in the theaters, and had no idea what I had been hit with. It just gets better and better as the years go by. Bravo Verhoeven.
Doesn't age so well (the interior of the ships, the outside shots of the city, etc) or is it just me?
America, the human species. The outsiders, the aliens. The melting-pot militaristic society, thinking of any other group that is different as enemies, a threat, underestimating its enemies' intelligence. A bunch of soldiers, conformists to society not questioning any of its ideals and politics. Sugar-coated imperialistic propaganda in the government-controlled media. HELLO! This is America in a dystopic future! Duh!
