Synopsis

After a vacation through Europe, newly single American expatriate Lillian (Blair Brown) returns to London to find her freewheeling younger sister, Amy (Bridget Fonda), at her flat. The polar opposite of her capricious sister, Lillian exerts total control, even of her love life. Though when a man she met on vacation (Bruno Ganz) tracks her down, determined to marry her, Lillian finds there may be some wisdom in Amy’s outlook.

Sir David Hare (born 5 June 1947) is an English playwright and theatre and film director.

Hare was born in St Leonards-on-Sea, Hastings, East Sussex, the son of Agnes (née Gilmour) and Clifford Hare, a sailor. He was educated at Lancing, an independent school in West Sussex, and at Jesus College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he was the Hiring Manager on the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club Committee, 1968.

Hare worked with the Portable Theatre Company from 1968 – 1971. His first play, Slag, was produced in 1970. He was Resident Dramatist at the Royal Court Theatre, London, from 1970–71, and in 1973 became resident dramatist at the Nottingham Playhouse, a major provincial theatre. In 1975, Hare co-founded the Joint Stock Theatre Company with David Aukin and Max Stafford-Clark.
