See Ugetsu and Sansho The Bailiff next; both among the greatest films ever made, in my opinion.
Amazing how every single one of those five women seems shallow, at first, and how Mizoguchi, the most human of all filmmakers, slowly constructs everything to find out the beauty and humanity in them in key scenes in the movie: Mickey's father confronting her; Hanai's scenes with her husband, etc: "Only" to remember us that pushing that "record" button in the camera is a matter of great gravity and responsibility..
First Mizoguchi i've watched, I thought it was fascinating mix of social drama and melodrama. The characters were interesting and their stories tragic. The burden of finincial pressure and how the women dealt differently with their situations was brilliantly told. Can't wait to watch his other movies!
