When Hollywood tapped wunderkind director Zack Snyder to guide their big-budget FX-heavy epics Dawn of the Dead (2004) and 300 (2006) through to fruition, they pulled him straight from the pinnacle of the advertising world. Snyder already had a veritable plethora of Clios under his belt, thanks to his fluidly filmed, ingenious spots for Corona beer, Nokia cell phones, and other products. Sucker Punch is stylish, action-packed, has gorgeous women kicking ass, features great music... and still manages to be boring somehow.
Not deep or developed, but contains enough symbolism and sincerity to justify its girl empowerment theme. When that doesn't work for you, I sometimes consider it very good trash. One of the most misunderstood movies of last year.
this was such a weirdly satisfying miss by zack snyder, i actually couldn't peel my eyes away from it. perhaps it's that i was alone in a hotel room in yonkers and it came on hbo, or perhaps is was the car accident effect that critical reviewers poorly rated it for, or perhaps this was one of the most riveting films i've ever seen. who knows. you should give it a shot and hope for the third option.
