Cliff (Andre Noble) is a cute suburban teenager celebrating his 18th birthday and his mom gives him a skateboard — a teen item. But his precocious 12 year-old sister Cookie (Haylee Wanstall) has a whole other agenda. She gives him a small bottle of vodka, a joint, a subway token and her card says “Have Sex”. So off Cliff goes downtown on a priapic prowl in this emotional and fiercely erotic adaptation of Bruce LaBruce’s “JD” stories.
Cliff heads straight for a hustler area in this unidentified Canadian city. There he is instantly drawn to the hunky Butch (Brendan Fehr) whose smoldering good looks and bedroom eyes will be burned into your memory. The boys head out for a night on the town. Whores, crackheads, exotic johns, a pregnant drug dealer — it’s all in a night for Butch, but brand-new for the suburban Cliff. Cliff’s got a liberal, loving, pot-smoking mom, medicated hyper-active sister and dinners at home. The friendship and faltering romance develops for these two boys until drugs pull them apart.
Sugar is as tight as a drum, the characters well-developed and the story crisp as could be. With first-rate, highly charismatic and sexually alluring actors, Sugar is sure to satisfy your cravings. –TLA Releasing
