This is my least favorite of the vengeance trilogy, although it remains essential to the series which is a survey of the various paths of revenge. This film depicts how revenge begets revenge which begets revenge and so on until it become evident that no one ever wins, no one ever achieves harmony or balance in this neverending chain of cruelty and violence. Some of the violence is unbearable for me to watch, not so much for the gore factor (of which I’ve seen worse elsewhere) but for the sheer inhumanity of the acts. In that sense, this film successfully achieves its end goal.
