Lisboa, Lisbona, Lisbon, Lisbonne, Lissabon – so many and even more names for the idea of a city which once ruled over a world empire. But time stood still there in the “Saudade”, the Fado and infinite memory. People fill that poetic space of what is almost forgotten. At the forefront is Augusto Macedo, the nigh one-hundred-year-old taxi-driver, who still drives his 70-year-old taxi through the narrow streets of Lisbon and meets up with some really remarkable characters: people of all nations who have settled here to survive, and somehow all have something to do with each other. He sees them, he dreams about them, he drives them, knows them: Wajsberg, the Jew deported from Prague during the war when he was still a child; Josefina, the nuisance of a tourist guide; Eduardo, the daydreamer shoeshine boy from the slums; Ana-Teresa, the nostalgic, beautiful girl; Thorsten, the Siberian juggler; and many, many more.
