“What shall tomorrow bring?
Tell me if you know.”
—This set to the image of a Carnivale troup dressed as their tribal ancestors, a depiction of which this entire scene is contrasted to, occurring moments efore. A brilliant touch, and a juxtaposition that the film continues.
And this following the opening four or five minute shot—one long pullback of a sunrise over a landscape. The word ‘majestic’ is thrown around too much, but in this case it fits.
The film that develops after these opening minutes is history. culture, politics, philosophy, and is occasionally surreal, frequently sublime, and leaves me feeling as if I understand (on a gut level if not an intellectual one) more about these people who live far away from me than I should understand from only 2:28:29. Fascinating film.
“Warriors sleep with history
in the beds of revolutions!”
Q: What aspect ratio is this? It seems wider than 16×9.
