Based on a true story that was claimed by writer Jay Anson, The Amityville Horror is about a large house on the coast of Long Island where newly weds George and Kathy Lutz and their three children move into the house that they hope will be their dream house but it ends up in terror. Despite full disclosure by the real estate agent of the home’s history, George and Kathy buy the house. George says, “Houses don’t have memories,” but they turn to their family priest Father Delaney who believes the house is haunted and performs an exorcism on the house. Stuart Rosenberg (August 11, 1927 – March 15, 2007) was an American film and television director whose notable works included the movies Cool Hand Luke (1967), Voyage of the Damned (1976), The Amityville Horror (1979), and The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984).
Early life and career
Born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, Rosenberg studied Irish literature at New York University in Manhattan, and began working as an apprentice film editor while in graduate school. After advancing to film editor, he then transitioned into directing in 1957 with the syndicated television series Decoy, starring Beverly Garland as an undercover police woman. It was the first police series on American television built around a female protagonist.

A never-ending borefest that, instead of making me lose sleep, almost put me into a coma
This pointless film plods along without much happening that's even worth thinking about. A couple of creepy scenes and hilarious moments of overacting are not enough to make it anything special. Why is this considered a classic? Oh yeah, it was based on a "true" story. The writing of the original book -- now THAT would make an interesting movie! Of course, the awful remake makes this one look like a masterpiece.
