A calculated film about chaos and its discontents, the movie suffers from its observance of formal convention. Thus the handhold camera at the moment all hell breaks loose during a riot, and the music swells up during a rousing conference hall speech. and the movie resorts to jump cuts to depict a man’s awkward stumble to oblivion. All of which I might forgive, but all of which feels out of sync with a film about people wrongheadedly trying to remake society from the bottom up. The frankness of the violence can be bracing, but the characters are depicted as oddly passive victims of circumstance, a funny-weird and disturbing view of events.
