What a manipulation of movie. The facts and overall the description of the characters are pure bullshit. What an insult to the real RAF.
So amazingly excellent. I love they caught the spirit and chronology of that revolutionary time period: the violence and the conflict between them, the climb and the rise all of it. i also enjoyed how there was a focus on the movement and the opposition to their movement; i personal lives came second. would've had 5 had it not been for the opening nude beach scene.
Long as hell, but very well worth it. Some insight into terrorism and radical leftism in 60's and 70's Germany. I didn't even know what the Red Army Faction really was about until I saw this film. Moritz Bleibtreu, the actor who plays Andreas Baader, also plays Andreas in the film Munich which is about Black September, a group closely related to the Red Army Faction. Just watch it.
The first half was easily a 4. Brilliant, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Now the second half, that was a mess. Just terrible. Maybe a 1. I say they should've made 2 movies out of it -- like Mesrine. But then again, I think Mesrine should've been 1 movie.
Given recent events in Toronto (G20) & the rise of terrorism this decade this film promises to reveal the source of radicalism. That is too much to ask of any film. The film begins with empathy for the cause but in the end, the Police State that the RAF fear is in fact created by or at least encouraged by their own actions. The self-fulfilling promise of violence begetting violence. A disturbing, petulant film.
Sensationalist and stupid. If you know anything about the RAF, you'll be amazed at how much bullsh*t this movie is trying to feed you.
Finely acted by all parties and technically ravishing, but directed in stuttering fashion from a script open to gigantic contextual gaps, even for those well-acquainted with the events in question. Ultimately, not a very satisfying or coherent portrait. Some excellent scenes, however.
A nice portrayal (albeit entertaining and glorified) of how movements go too far
just watched The Baader Meinhof Complex, really good film! A pretty stop on appraisal of the RAF I thought, the way it shows how their political ideals got totally lost within a frenzy of nihilistic violence was brilliant. One thing though is that they never really discuss within the film their ideas in any depth at all, though I think that's effective in itself, showing the farce of the urban guerrilla how action became much more important than theory.
more time to ideas would have been much better, still, it works as an introduction to germany's radical movements and a better context to appreciate germany in autumn, wich is not at the auteurs yet and all fassbinder lovers must watch
A sharply-crafted period political thriller that doesn't let the politics get in the way of the story. Strong performances, gripping action and suspense scenes, and a strong atmosphere of 70s international paranoia. More than just a history lesson, and more than just an entertaining thriller, but a fine example of both.
Pro-Capitalist propoganda. This film is an untrue depiction. Hardly strange when the German government partly funded this film.
Really really good. Shocking that this came from the guy who make Body of Evidence. Great evocation of an era and a movement. Awesome cinematography and brilliant action set pieces.
Brilliant! Excellent cinematography, fascinating archival images and the gesture to connect radical histories across the globe. I also appreciated how the German activists were presented with warts and all -- their racism and sexism. Brilliant film. Just brilliant.
A solid addition to the recent wave of German cinema examining the darker moments of its history.
