and the priceless expression on Cage's face when he received news he'd been assigned to the Property Room...
Just seen this, BRILLIANT! Bland reviews miss the point of masterful storytelling that yet is only the backdrop for a deeply human message, reminiscent of Eastwood in its approach. Ravishing cinematography. Cage's performance sizzles like a burning sun, clearly the director's new soulmate. As usual, you dance in Herzog's vision of tragedy &brilliant irony &are left haunted by the essence of what it means to be human.
Herzog's best film. It's bizarre, stupid, funny, dark, and constantly entertaining. I'd put my money on this becoming a cult film.
it feels light but heavy. ridiculous but reasonable. I don't think I'll ever quite understand the movie but I still like it.
Even with a bigger budget and a more traditional approach, Herzog's film still has all of his love for the absurd. Perhaps channeling Kinski, Nic Cage gives one of his best performances in years. He's just explosive, popping off the screen with thrilling energy. And how could one not help but love the reptile scenes? Plus, it's just one funny and entertaining film, but Herzog still finds room for transcendence.
Fuck this was so promising, but the second half just looses it. Genius reptile scenes! Btw, any thoughts on that?
I didn't realize til halfway through this it was a Herzog film, then it all made sense!
A different, but pleasing take. Consistently entertaining and frequently hilarious. You don't have a lucky crackpipe?
Absolute garbage from start to finish. Easily the worst thing that Herzog ever created, with a performance by Nicolas Cage that is irritating enough to make me want to break his nose so he'll stop talking thru it. Abel Ferrara's film was a masterpiece, this is a travesty. Herzog and Cage should both take a very long hiatus from filmmaking, and ponder the old days, when they were talented and interesting. F minus.
Werner Herzog has said that he fought to change the name of the film because it really had nothing to do with the Abel Ferrara film. I would've liked to see that work out in his favor because if you watch this movie on it's own it's great but if you watch it and constantly compare it to Ferrara & Keitel's Bad Lieutenant it'll fall short of your expectations.
Very few people figured that a remake of a movie that the director never even saw starring the biggest wacko in Hollywood would wind up a thoughtful, eccentric dark-comedy with a number of strangely gorgeous and haunting moments. This film reaffirms that Herzog is one of the most original and versatile directors to ever live. To me it actually feels like a film made by David Lynch at his best more than anything else.
so weird. haha. i loved the music. and that scene where nicolas cage surprised those old women while shaving. wtf.
I can forgive Cage for all of the follies he gets himself into, when he finally does a film where I know he will knock it out of the park. Combining two madmen (Herzog and Cage) and you get an utter masterpiece of style and wackiness. The most overlooked film of 09, Cage should have been nominated for best actor, and Herzog director.
