Early film from director Samuel Fuller is unfortunately not one of his best. The story is interesting as a historical oddity, but doesn’t really work as a drama, Fuller’s attempts to wring a personal story out of it seems forced and melodramatic, and the whole film seems lack Fuller’s usual energy – that is, until the exciting climax that is vintage Fuller. A very entertaining performance by Vincent Price, and excellent black and white cinematography by James Wong Howe, but Fuller would go on to make much better movies.
