Synopsis

The Bear That Wasn’t is a ten minute animated short about a bear that settles down for his long winter nap. While he is asleep the progress of man continues. He wakes up to find himself in the middle of an industrial complex. He then gets confused by the foreman as a worker and is told to work. To this he responds, “but I’m not a man, I’m a Bear.” He is taken to each of his successive bosses, who try to convince him that he is just a very hairy man that needs a shave. –IMDb

(all three of which were later inducted into the National Film Registry) and Jones’ famous “Hunting Trilogy” of Rabbit Fire, Rabbit Seasoning, and Duck! Rabbit! Duck! (1951–1953).

Frank Tashlin, animator, director, and author of the original book Chuck Jones based this short on, was so upset by Jones' handling of the material that he claims to have never talked with Jones again. It isn't a successful film, and it's actually a hard slog for a short. Some nice layouts and backgrounds at least. Also, if you ever watch it, be prepared to have the theme song stuck in your head for weeks on end.
