The villain, of course, looks a bit stupid sometimes, but "The Blob" is a well-crafted 80's B-Movie, with a good script and a nice blend of teen-movie and horror. I think J.J. Abrams must have seen that one, because there are some strong similarities with "Super 8".

Yeah I noticed somewhat of a similar vibe with the military aspect of it. J.J. somehow managed to create a shoe-horned antagonist with even less purpose.
