John Cazale photographed The Box in an all-night session at the apartment of fellow actor Michael Lombard in November 1965. Cazale shot entirely on donated 35mm short ends and with minimal light, because a fuse blew and the fuse box was below the apartment in a movie theater that had closed for the night. The Box, directed by Marvin Starkman, was a U.S. entry at Edinburgh, San Francisco, Cork, and Oberhausen Film Festivals, and eventually earned itself a place in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. —Oscilloscope
