"The soil of Burma is red, and so are its rocks ..." The film portrays a group of Japanese soldiers in their quest to find their lost fellow soldier Mizushima. The film revolves around an amazing story of hope and acceptance. The music is fantastic and the photo gives me the chills. I warmly recommend this film to all.
This film reduced me to a pile of tears. Ichikawa's direction is so sublime, lyrical, and poetic. He manages to find, in the aftermath of the horror of war, a glimmer of transcendence. The cinematography is rich, and the music is just as amazing. I have never seen any war film quite like this one, if it can even be called a war film. An achievement on every level.
For me, one of the best films ever made. A movie that transcends film and hovers somewhere near artistic perfection.
A truly beautiful and powerful film. Along with Fires on the Plain, one of the best anti-war and humanistic movies I've ever seen. 5 stars out of 5, it's a recommendation to everyone.
