and why is that?
‘Caligari’ is a definite classic and great film. I really enjoyed Caligari as a character, throughout and was disappointed that although Francis was telling the story, I felt he was quite secondary, in character portrayal. Lastly, the film was eerie in some parts and gritty exaggerated in others. I understand the popularity it has achieved, since its release.
Yes the film is important historically, yes the sets - cribbed from the then popular expressionist stage - were great, but all that said, does it still sing AS a movie? Is it's direction at all remarkable? Conrad Veidt for the little while he is shown in action is captivating. And apart from the 'influence' it has had & the feeling that I SHOULD enjoy this paranoid classic it is however not a movie I enjoy
Nothing apart from some of David Lynch's films can horrify with their sheer alien hostility and strangeness like the great silent films.
Mira que non terán pasado anos, e segue a ser fascinante (incluido e tal vez especialmente polo fondo musical de Giuseppe Becce: non son capaz de asimilar o cine mudo sen música de fondo)
Horror classic that has stood the test of time. Slow moving but rewarding tale of a mad doctor/sonambulist taking on the role of the "mythical" Caligari. Wild hand painted sets ad to the mystique/dream quality of the pic coming full circle in the film's twisted denoument. Somewhat impressionistic, surreal and most definately strange.
Beautiful game of colors and sceneries. One of the best silent of the horror gender, revolutionary, amoung other aspects, for introducing the twist ending in movies.
Despite being visually stunning, it develops quite slowly for such a short film.
This film has a unique style and interesting taste. First when the day come up to night , the picture change to Blue Dark colour and when the day is afternoon or morning the picture change to Sephia mode. Second , it was from the several character make up, make the characters look like a face draculla. Third , the background from each stage to another stage looks like great and an interesting view.
Truly a frightening film. Not only in the stylistic elements such as the cubism inspired set design and the brilliant lighting and shadowplay, but also in the analysis of insanity, modernism and just a genuine fear of the unknown. Iconic in every sense of the word, those close up images of Caligari and Cesare are disturbing as all hell.
capolavoro assoluto. scenografie allucinate e bellissime. trama affascinante e ripresa, secondo me, più volte nel cinema odierno.
A great horror film and the German expressionistic style at its best. Haunting images, stunning set design and a wild plot makes this a must see film.
fascinating and really compelling. the set design was very gothic and reminded me of early tim burton as well as charles laughton's night of the hunter. the twists were excellent too. visually a real treat, not to mention that it has a great deal of plot and gets through it with such style. i really was impressed this piece.
It reminds me of the things I dream about while I'm asleep at night. This film really gives you that feeling of walking down an abandoned street at night where everything seems to be some kind of imposing threat. Visually, this is one of the most well-composed films I've seen, the art direction and lighting are out of this world. It hasn't aged a bit.
