Synopsis

A poetic guitarist Eric Draven is brought back to life by a crow a year after he and his fiancée are murdered. The crow guides him through the land of the living, and leads him to his killers: knife thrower Tin-tin, drugetic Funboy, car buff T-Bird, and the unsophisticated Skank. One by one, Eric gives these thugs a taste of their own medicine. However their leader Top-Dollar, a world-class crime lord who will dispatch his enemies with a Japanese sword and joke about it later, will soon learn the legend of the crow and the secret to the vigilante’s invincibility. —IMDb

Alex Proyas

Alex Proyas is an innovative and versatile filmmaker, with a penchant for large-scale science fiction productions. Maintaining prolific careers in both commercials and feature films, Proyas often uses the smaller venue as a testing ground for his big screen imagination, an inspired move that has rendered him a master of visual imagery.

Born in Egypt to Greek parents, Proyas moved to Sydney, Australia, when he was three years old. By 18, he was a distinguished freshman at the Australian Film and Television School, and a classmate of Jane Campion, for whom he composed the score to A Girl’s Own Story. During his first year at school, Proyas wrote and directed Groping, the 1982 Best Short Film winner at both the Sydney and London Film Festivals. In his second year, he formed a production company along with two peers, called Meaningful Eye Contact. Dissatisfaction with school led Proyas to drop out in 1984, as he began directing music videos through the firm. The success of his video… read more

Good movie although it has dated somewhat regarding the obvious music video style it was shot in. Otherwise there are some good performances considering the lean and thin script and a cracking soundtrack filled to the brim with 90's alt rock.

The rooftop scene while NIN cover (Joy Division) is just so fucking awesome. Alex Proyas is a great director.

Conventional in every sense of the word, but one cannot help to feel something. You can notice obvious influence on The Dark Knight, and the film is photographed quite well. Good debut from Proyas who now has reversed the success of his early career. Not to mention, Brandon Lee's performance is remarkable. Too bad it was also this film that ended his life, yet started his career as a great performer.
