I bought the Criterion blu back when I was a completist, despite not being a huge fan, and saw it again tonight. It’s gotten worse with age – the script is very rickety and the dialogue is full of cliches, the screenwriter should sue himself for plagiarizing his script for Forrest Gump. It does have beautiful cinematography with the occasional shot worthy of Fleming, however, so it’s not a complete failure. However, the selfishness of Benjamin leaving his child is beyond sympathy – many people with diseases worse than his have successfully raised children. It’s been hereby demoted to two stars. I’ll hold onto the blu tho, as I consider my film collection to be a cinematic backup drive in case of global apocalypse, and future humans need something to watch so they can understand the concept of “Oscar bait”. ;)
