Dr. Helen Benson is summoned to a military facility with several other scientist when an alien spacecraft of sorts arrives in New York City. Aboard is a human-like alien and a giant robot of immense size and power. The alien identifies himself as Klaatu and says he has come to save the Earth. The US military and political authorities see him as a threat however and decide to use so-called intensive interrogation techniques on him but Dr. Benson decides to facilitate his escape. When she learns exactly what he means when he says he is there to save the Earth, she tries to convince him to change his intentions.-IMdb.
Graded on the "how dare you remake this classic" curve by blind genre goons. Scott Derrickson put together a proper modern exploration of the same tale, and it was unfairly maligned simply for existing. Moving dramatic moments, fun effects updates, and excellent casting decisions make for an excellent retelling of a classic.
Was forced to sit through this for like a third time yesterday. It's just so bad. The original is so much better and enjoyable. The only good thing is that you get to look at Jennifer Connelly for a good deal of the film.
As expected, a lifeless mega-budget dud. The expensive special effects and slick visuals only underline how bland and completely devoid of any drama or tension the predictable plot is, and it takes itself way too seriously with its hokey environmentalist message. A talented cast sleepwalks through their roles - though Keanu Reeves seems right at home in the blundering spectacle. Pointless and instantly forgettable.
