Thrilled to see this finally on the DC page. Would have to disagree with the notion that this is not in keeping with Cronenberg’s personal thematic trajectory. It still strikes me as deeply body conscious: the coma as catalyst, the bizarre suicide scene, the general sense of one’s subservience to their organism’s independent dictates, and of course the feeling that something dreadful, if potentially useful, is growing inside that big head of Walken’s. I find it works beautifully as melodrama. Maybe I’m crazy, but I think it may be Walken’s most moving performance.
