The Decline of Western Civilization resembles my all time favorite documentary, Woodstock, not just because they both cover a music movement and its surrounding culture, but because they were made at the time and feel authentic in a way a retrospective would not. The punk movement was, perhaps, the last truly outrageous moment in popular culture and, were it not a documentary, one could be forgiven for thinking these bizarre people were made up fictions. With wall to wall music (both very good and very bad) and fascinating interview subjects, Spheeris succeeds in capturing a moment in time. It somehow seemed appropriate that I viewed this on a scratchy old VHS that seemed in danger of breaking at any moment.
Read We've Got the Neutron Bomb and watch some Target videos for a more comprehensive and exciting look at Los Angeles punk music. Although, the Decline does have a hilarious interview w/ Billy Zoom of X.
